St. Vincent Coast Guard Base Overview - Canouan Sub Base
Name: SVG Ship Canouan Sub-Base
Location: Charlestown, Canouan
The idea of having permanent Coast Guard presence on the Grenadines Island of Canouan was born during a discussion between Coast Guard Commander, Brenton Cain and the Deputy Chief at the United States Military Liaison Officer (US MLO), US Embassy Barbados. Construction of the Sub-Base commenced in September of 2012 by the constructing firm Palgag Technologies Limited of Israel. Funding for its construction was provided by the Government of the United States of America. Construction was completed in September of 2013 and the building was handed over to the Coast Guard Service in October 2013. Operations at Coast Guard Sub-Base Canouan commenced in November of 2013.
The Coast Guard Sub-Base, Canouan is an extension of the Coast Guard Service, hence all Operations Center duties performed by the main base, Calliaqua is also conducted by the Sub-Base, Canouan. It also conducts twenty four hours, seven days a week Operations Center activities.
The Sub-Base is responsible for Coast Guard operations in the Southern Grenadines and supports the main base operations when required. The Sub-Base is commanded by a Sub Lieutenant who is responsible for the day to day operations of the base.
